A side heavy design is one in which the largest, most noticeable shapes or forms are all gathered on one of the side edges. This holds the viewer’s eye on the side of the picture. Usually, we want the viewer’s eye to travel easily to all parts of the composition, rather than being held in one place. Maintaining a balance in the visual weights, and distribution of the shapes or forms makes this possible.
