A top heavy design is one where the largest, most noticeable shapes or forms are all gathered along the top edge. This holds the viewer’s eye at the top of the painting. Usually, we want the viewer’s eye to travel easily to all parts of the composition, rather than being held in one place. Maintaining a balance in the visual weights, and distribution of the shapes or forms makes this possible.
