What is a bottom heavy design?

Last updated on 30 Jan, 2024

A bottom heavy design is one in which the largest, most noticeable shapes or forms are all gathered at the bottom edge. This keeps the viewer’s eye at the bottom of the painting. Usually, we want the viewer’s eye to travel easily to all parts of the composition, rather than being held in one place. Maintaining a balance in the visual weights, and distribution of the shapes or forms makes this possible.
