How does glazing change color from opaque to transparent?

One of the big changes that occur when you glaze, besides creating harmonized color, is that opaque areas of paint get covered in a wash of thin paint, and become transparent. Anytime there are thin washes of other colors on top of other more solid, opaque areas of color, they become more transparent.
