I have trouble “seeing” the values as soon as we add color. Can discerning values be learned?

Yes! Most likely you can see the difference between pink and dark red, right? In the beginning it is easy to see big color value differences. Over time, your eyes will be able to see more and more subtle differences of value. You will become more sensitive over time to value contrast. The goal is learning to see value first, and then color.

Here are some tricks to help you to see value contrast:

  • Take a photo of your art on your phone, and convert it to black and white.

  • Squint your eyes and look at your art.

  • Look at your art from a distance. Color tends to diminish the further we stand from our art.
