How does space between the objects factor into the design?  

Spacing is part of your design, and needs the same attention as the shapes themselves. Look for differences in the spaces between the objects. This area is often called negative space and whitespace, but we call it the Quiet Conversation. These areas can have a quiet modelling in them that allows the eye to discover interest in this shape or area.
